"Rather than searching for one’s 'soul mate,' the focus should be on developing character traits to be the 'right person.' While love is an important component of a successful marriage, love alone is not enough. Marriage requires commitment, faithfulness, work and sacrifice. Sexual attraction, while certainly important to marriage, is only one of many components that go into successful partner selection. Ideally, one is marrying not only a sexual partner, but also a best friend. The evidence of long-term marital success suggests that partners should be selected mainly on the grounds of mutual compatibility and shared attitudes, values and beliefs. These are grounds that extend beyond physical attraction, which declines with aging and familiarity." ~ Article by Barbara Dafoe Whitehead and David Popenoe, “Who Wants to Marry a Soulmate?” Report by the National Marriage Project, Rutgers University, (2001).
